Magadh University was established on 1 March 1962 under the Magadh University Act, 1961, and began functioning the following day. It owes its founding to Satyendra Narayan Sinha, the then Education Minister of Bihar, while the foundation of the university was laid by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. The renowned historian K. K. Dutta served as its founder Vice-Chancellor.
The university started with two constituent colleges, 32 affiliated colleges and seven postgraduate departments. It has since grown into the largest university of Bihar, and is today governed by the Bihar State University Act, 1976. Its jurisdiction spans the five districts of Gaya, Aurangabad, Nawada, Jehanabad and Arwal, and its secular, disciplined campus draws students from across India and abroad every year.
